What has been the most rewarding aspect of serving as a Fulbright grantee?
I think that the most rewarding aspect of this experience so far has been getting to know a new city and community that is so different from anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Logroño is a relatively small city, making it a very tight-knit community. I frequently see and interact with my students around town, making me feel more integrated into this community. The pace of life feels more relaxed because of things like “siesta” and shorter school days. Traveling to nearby pueblos has also allowed me to further explore the area, whether it be through hiking, museums, or trying new foods.
What has been surprising to you about your host community?
One thing that has surprised me about this experience is the enthusiasm and dedication many people have when it comes to language learning. I am currently participating in an “intercambio” or language exchange. I meet with a fellow teacher from Logroño weekly and we split our time, speaking half in English and half in Spanish. This opportunity has not only improved my Spanish-speaking skills, but it has also given me a local friend to reach out to for recommendations and advice.
